107 killed in traffic accidents in Myanmar in August

YANGON, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- A total of 107 people were killed and 924 others injured in traffic accidents across Myanmar last month, the state newspaper New Light of Myanmar reported Wednesday.

Of the 516 traffic accident cases during the month, the northern Mandalay division accounted for the most with 23.8 percent, the report said, adding that the total loss of property due to the mishap was over 125.85 million Kyats (over 100,000 U.S. dollars), up 93 percent from the previous month.

According to the Committee for Smooth and Secured Transport, more than 1,000 people lost their lives annually in recent years in Myanmar due to car accidents. The yearly loss due to such accidents amounted to a value of about 94 billion Kyats.

The authorities have stressed the observance of traffic rules on every occasion.

Meanwhile, the Myanmar police authorities launched a car accident prevention campaign in Yangon last year, aimed at bringing down the death rate out of such accidents and improving traffic flow and safety in the city.

There are so far 1.239 million motor vehicles registered in Myanmar including 800,000 motor cycles, according to the latest official statistics.

Motor vehicles in Myanmar are registered in eight categories ranging from motor cycles to heavy trucks. Of the total, motor cycles accounted for 63.8 percent.

The number of motor vehicles operating in the former capital of Yangon hit over 127,000.

In Yangon, which has a population of 6.4 million, ownership of cars was registered as one per 50 people, according to department figures.

In a campaign to avoid traffic jam and air pollution as well as to reduce traffic accidents in Yangon, the authorities have barred motor vehicles manufactured several decades ago to operate in Yangon. However, transit through the city is allowed.
