by Khaing Pray Htun

Rice and peas are still being exported in increasing amounts from Burma to Bangladesh via the Bangladesh border town of Teknaf.

A source from Teknaf told the media that in the last two months, Bangladesh has imported 2,352 metric tons of peas, and 5,660 metric tons of rice. In August alone, 2,927 metric tons of peas and 3,467 metric tons of rice were exported to Bangladesh from Burma.

It has been learned from a source in Teknaf that so many cargo ships are coming to Bangladesh from Burma for economic resources. A businessman from Teknaf, Md. Hasem, said that about five or six cargo ships are yet to arrive in Teknaf carrying 5,000 - 6,000 tons of rice and peas.

Businessmen from Bangladesh believe that by importing rice and peas from Burma they are will be able to bring stability to the prices in the market.
